In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
