A person who laced sweets with sedative and gave them to minors at a youth camp in the region has admitted sexual offences against two boys who were nine and 10.

The defendant was taken into custody after eight youngsters and an older person experienced illness at the facility in July.

The elderly man, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, pleaded guilty to a series of 17 offences when he stood at Leicester Crown Court on the end of the week.

Nevertheless, he denied a single sexual charge he was facing, which was involving a nine-year-old boy.

Ruben was kept in jail ahead of a subsequent court date on 28 November.

'Treat game'

The legal representative, presenting evidence, detailed the defendant's actions to the court.

She stated his victims were children from difficult backgrounds who were attending a summer camp which he managed.

The defendant played a "treat game" with the youngsters, the prosecutor said, in which he would go into the boys' rooms when they were settling down and ask them to ingest treats "rapidly".

She told the court the defendant had conducted this practice with the boys "over an extended period", and minors had previously become sick the next day.

She explained Ruben had been capable of justifying this for many years as the children being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepson had suspicions in recently.

The legal representative continued: "Recently" his stepchild had concerns about the situation, for good reason.

"They resolved" to investigate in the defendant's belongings."

Mrs Prior KC explained items including baby oil, ointment and injection devices were located, and his family member alerted the law enforcement about his concerns.

She explained the defendant proceeded to conduct the "treat game" with six children that evening - that Saturday - and they were all sick the following morning.

"The police had not gone out by that point," she continued.

The regulatory agency, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, previously told that it was reviewing the police response of the situation.

The prosecutor explained the youngsters were unable to walk properly due to their sickness, so the family member contacted the authorities once more.

She said Ruben then engaged in the "treat game" in a room of five minors.
